Course Content

The course presents a number of themes and topics such as, research strategies and designs in social sciences in general and in educational research in particular, the nature of quantitative research, quantitative data collection and analysis. Examples of topics are; epistemology, onthology, measurements (questionnaires, structured interviews and observations), indicators, reliability, validity, cause-effect, generalisation, replication and differences between qualitative and quantitative research. An introduction to statistical techniques (univariate, bivariate and multivariate) is also given as well as the concept of statistcal significance. The conduct of large quantitative studies are discussed with PISA as an example. In the course there is also an introduction to statistical analyses with SPSS software.

Entry Requirements: Admitted to Phd-studies. Maximum number of participants is 20 and doctoral students at the Department of Education are given priority.
