The political history of the Medieval and Early Modern periods remains an important field of study at the Department of History. Much interest has been directed towards the development of the state into a complex organization, the political leverage of the Swedish peasants and the shifting strategies for the representation and legitimation of authority. A research topic of great importance concerns the conceptualization and diffusion of political ideas and their translation into social practices. Many scholars therefore focus on the interaction between power-wielders and the common people, to study how political arguments are exchanged and then transformed within different social settings.
