Professor emeritus Magnus Ljung passed away peacefully 12 April, 2022.

Magnus Ljung became chair professor of English at the department in 1979, and in that capacity remained a dynamic and much loved presence at the department for more than two decades. He was also very successful in disseminating his work to an audience beyond the university. His interest were manifold; his research on swearing, manifested in publications from the 1980s onwards, made him the go-to person for newspapers whenever expletives were discussed.

Ljung retired in 2000, but he remained involved with the department for many years after that, and found time to write an account of “The Stockholm English Department from 1979 on”, in Stockholm University English Department: Our First 75 Years (2007), that he edited with Gunnel Melchers.

He is dearly remembered.
